Art and Design High School has always been bustling with activities for seniors, especially as they prepare to showcase their talents. However, one activity is no longer optional. On April 10, 2025, seniors gathered in the Kenny Gallery to examine and celebrate their peers’ portfolio pieces. This event, known as the Senior Elective Exhibition, provided an opportunity for students to display their work and for others to appreciate the diverse talents within the school.
The exhibition has evolved over the years. Initially, participation was optional, but starting last year, it became a requirement for all students. Assistant Principal of Art, Mr. Ian Pasetsky, explained, “So what if I tell you that, starting last year, we decided that it would be essential for the students who are in electives to show?” He emphasized that teachers are responsible for ensuring each student contributes at least one piece.
Interestingly, while the event is primarily for seniors, many juniors attended, eager to gain insight and inspiration. The exhibition offered a platform where students could shine in their respective electives.
Mr. James Harrington, an illustration teacher, highlighted the cooperation between illustration and photography students. “The illustration students and the photography students had the same task, to complete the AP Portfolio. We cooperate best during our annual critiques when students from both majors often participate in critiques with other classes,” he said. He emphasized the importance of these cooperative activities in developing independence and a sense of self-efficacy among students.
Ultimately, the Senior Portfolio Exhibition is a vital part of the school’s mission; the requirement for seniors to participate fosters collaboration and engagement, ensuring that all students are actively involved in their educational journey.
